Dental anxiety is common in children. Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a safe, effective way to help anxious children relax and have a positive dental experience. At Myriam Cerezo, DMD, Pediatric Dentist, we use nitrous oxide sedation to ensure your child remains calm and comfortable throughout their dental procedure.
Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small mask placed over the nose. When inhaled, it produces a feeling of relaxation and well-being. Children remain fully conscious and can communicate during the procedure. The gas takes effect within minutes and wears off just as quickly once the mask is removed. Nitrous oxide has been used safely in pediatric dentistry for decades and has an excellent safety record.
"Children remain fully conscious and can communicate during the procedure."
Our team may recommend nitrous oxide for children who experience dental anxiety or fear, have difficulty sitting still for extended procedures, have a strong gag reflex that interferes with treatment, or need multiple treatments completed in one visit. It is particularly helpful for young children who may not fully understand what is happening during a dental procedure. By keeping the child relaxed, we can complete the necessary treatment more efficiently and with less stress for both the child and parent.

Before administering nitrous oxide, our team will explain the process to both parent and child. The child will breathe normally through a small mask placed over their nose. Within a few minutes, they will begin to feel relaxed and may experience a tingling sensation in their hands and feet. Some children describe feeling warm or light. Throughout the procedure, our team carefully monitors the child's comfort level and adjusts the gas mixture as needed. The child remains awake and responsive at all times.

Nitrous oxide is one of the safest forms of sedation available in dentistry. Side effects are rare and typically mild. Some children may feel slightly dizzy or nauseated, but these effects pass quickly. After the procedure, the child breathes pure oxygen for several minutes to flush the nitrous oxide from their system. Within 5 to 10 minutes, the effects are completely gone and the child can resume normal activities, including returning to school.
"Within 5 to 10 minutes, the effects are completely gone."
We recommend that parents avoid giving their child a heavy meal within two hours of the appointment. Light eating is generally fine. Explain to your child that they will wear a special mask that will help them feel relaxed and comfortable. Use positive, reassuring language. Our team will take the time to introduce the mask and let the child get comfortable before beginning any treatment. Parents are welcome to stay in the room during the procedure if it helps their child feel more at ease.
